EVALUATIONS

Frequently asked questions

What are your credentials?

I hold a Master’s Degree in Education and am a certified, licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in the state of Virginia.

What experience do you have with evaluations?

I meet Virginia’s qualifications to provide homeschool proof of progress evaluations. Currently, portfolio reviews are the only type of evaluation I offer, though I may expand in the future to include standardized testing. My background includes six years of experience as an SLP, evaluating individuals with learning differences and speech/language impairments. Additionally, as a homeschooling parent for 15 years, I have ensured my own children’s yearly progress through both standardized tests and/or portfolio reviews.

Are you a homeschooler?

Yes! I have homeschooled my three children from the start. Two have graduated and are excelling in college (Dean’s List!), and my youngest is set to graduate in 2027. My children have faced various learning challenges, including ASD (Level 1), Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and ADHD. Homeschooling has allowed me to tailor their education to their needs, providing the necessary support without the red-tape often encountered in the traditional school system.

Which type of evaluation is best for my child?

At this time, I only offer portfolio evaluations, which are a great option for many homeschool families. However, if you’re considering standardized testing or other assessment methods, I’m happy to provide referrals to qualified professionals who offer those services.

How does the portfolio evaluation work?
  1. Book an appointment through my website.

  2. Submit payment prior to our meeting.

  3. Complete a short form detailing your student’s academic year.

  4. Join our scheduled Google Meet session (approximately 30 minutes) where I will discuss your student’s progress with you and, if possible, your student.

  5. Within 1-2 business days, I will provide a signed Proof of Progress letter, which you can submit to the appropriate school authorities. This letter confirms that your student is making adequate academic progress as required by Virginia law (§22.1-254.1).

Where does the evaluation take place?

All portfolio evaluations are conducted online via Google Meet, so you can participate from the comfort of your home—pajamas welcome!

Who needs to be present during the evaluation?

I need to speak with the primary homeschooling parent/guardian and the student. If your child has a disability or communication challenges that make participation difficult, we can discuss accommodations. My background in speech-language pathology includes experience with augmentative and alternative communication.

What should I have ready before my evaluation appointment?

Your portfolio can include any materials that showcase your student’s progress, such as:

  • Writing samples

  • Booklists

  • Science projects

  • Educational field trip summaries

  • Awards and achievements

  • Nature journals

  • Business projects

  • Customized learning activities (especially for students with special needs)

I’d also love to know what curricula (if any) you used and how you implemented it. Every homeschool journey is unique, and I celebrate the progress your student has made—no need to fit into a traditional school mold!

What will you need from my child for the evaluation?

These evaluations are low-stress! If your child can participate, I’ll ask simple questions like:

  • "What was something you loved learning about this year?"

  • "Tell me about a project or achievement you're proud of."

If participation is not possible due to individual needs, let me know in advance so we can adjust accordingly.

Special Considerations:

Do you have experience with learning disabilities?
Yes! My work as an SLP involved providing therapy for individuals with speech, language, and learning disabilities. Additionally, as a homeschool parent to neurodivergent children, I have firsthand experience adapting education to fit individual needs.

How do you evaluate a non-reader or a struggling reader?
Portfolio evaluations are ideal for students with learning differences. The focus is on their progress—measuring growth based on their abilities, not on external benchmarks. I celebrate each student’s unique journey and milestones!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

About My Consulting Services

1. What kind of homeschool consulting do you offer?
I provide one-on-one online consultations to help families navigate homeschooling in Virginia. Whether you're just getting started, need guidance on curriculum choices, or want help planning high school coursework, I offer tailored support to meet your needs.

2. What is your homeschooling experience?
I have been homeschooling for 15 years and have taught science at homeschool co-ops for 10 years. My background in education allows me to support families in making informed decisions that fit their unique needs and goals.

3. Do you have experience working with students with special needs?
Yes! I have experience working with students who have learning differences, including those with ADHD, dyslexia, autism, dysgraphia, and other unique learning challenges. I can help suggest ways families can tailor their homeschooling approach to best support their child's needs. Such advice does not, however, replace guidance from a licensed therapeutic practitioner, such as a physician or an SLP, OT, or PT. While I am licensed as an SLP in VA, those are not the services I'm offering here.

4. Do you offer services outside of Virginia?
No, my consulting services are specifically for Virginia homeschoolers. I focus on Virginia homeschool laws and resources, so I cannot provide guidance for homeschooling in other states.

5. Are you a lawyer or a graduation counselor?
No, I am not a lawyer and cannot provide legal advice on matters such as custody disputes or school district conflicts. Additionally, I am not a graduation counselor but can help families understand Virginia’s homeschool requirements and plan high school coursework.
