About Homeschool Proof-of-Progress Evaluations

Virginia homeschooling families must provide proof of educational progress each year. Evaluators must hold a master’s degree or higher for a proof-of-progress to be valid.

After assessing your student’s progress through a portfolio-style evaluation, I provide a signed evaluation letter on official letterhead, summarizing their academic achievements and areas of growth. This review is not based on standardized testing but focuses on your student’s individual progress throughout the year. Because every student has unique strengths and learning challenges, this evaluation considers how they have grown in their own educational journey rather than comparing them to a set standard. This letter will confirm that your student is making adequate academic progress, as required by Virginia law (§22.1-254.1).

Each evaluation is individualized—there is no standard form. A typical letter of progress will include:

  • The date of the evaluation

  • Your student’s name

  • A summary of how progress was assessed

  • A brief description of their educational growth and accomplishments

Submitting Your Proof of Progress

Virginia law requires parents to submit their student’s proof of progress to their local public school superintendent’s office by August 1 each year. It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure this deadline is met. A copy of the letter should be sent to the appropriate public office while the original should be kept in a safe place in case it is required in the future. When mailing the letter, It is a good practice to send it via certified mail with a return receipt.

Navigate to my appointments page to book a 15-, 30-, 60-, or 90-minute session. Please note, for complex questions such as those involving how to begin homeschooling or how to design a high school plan, a 30 minute appointment is not sufficient for me to address. Email follow-up is available for clarifying questions after our meeting, but if I believe a follow-up consultation would be more helpful, I may recommend scheduling another session.
